Travel to Dangerous Countries Would Make You Uninsurable

Foreign Travel to dangerous hot-spots in the world is too risky for Canadian insurers

This infographic gives you a quick snapshot of the 10 most dangerous countries in the world to travel to. These countries would be totally uninsurable for a Canadian life insurance company, but this is by no means an exhaustive list of countries that would make applying for life insurance a problem if you were travelling there. What is interesting about this infographic is the types of dangers that exist in these countries, and how these dangers could result in personal harm to you or your property. these risks include:

Military conflict
Civil unrest
Terrorism risk
Kidnapping risk
Geopolitical instability

The other interesting part of this infographic is the crime rate statistics, showing which countries in the world are the worst for murder rates, terrorism acts, and kidnappings. It is best to avoid many of these countries for foreign travel unless you have a really pressing need to go there.

Wild Statistic: Canada and The United Kingdom are top countries for Kidnapping Risk. I suspect this is mainly due to domestic/family problems which leads to parents arguing over custody and kidnapping their own children, but I’m not sure. If you know why Canada and the U.K. have such high kidnapping statistics, please comment below.

If for some reason you do need to travel to these countries, and you need to buy life insurance, a regular policy from a Canadian life insurance company might be a straight decline. In that case, your best bet would be to look at the alternative, special risk market where companies like Hunter McCourquodale, which has an Accidental Death policy for War/Terrorism regions, including Iraq and Afghanistan.
