VIDEO: Regular Occupation vs. Any Occupation Definition
Your Occupation Definition for Disability Insurance is Very Important
Regular vs. Any Occupation definition can extend or limit your benefits
Your occupation definition can determine when you return to work
In the video above, Mitch Reynolds, President of Life Guard Insurance, explains how the occupation definition of your disability insurance plan can affect how long your disability income benefits are paid for. Most group insurance plans have only a 24 month Regular Occupation definition, and after that it changes to Any Occupation definition.
What is in a definition?
How important is the definition of disability regarding your occupation. It is very important. Here is some basic wording of a Regular Occupation Definition vs. an Any Occupation Definition
Regular Occupation
You will be considered total disabled if, as due to an injury or illness, you are not able to perform the regular duties of your current occupation, and you are under a physicians care for your injury and/or illness.
Any Occupation
You will be considered total disabled if, as due to an injury or illness, you are not able to work in any type of gainful employment for which your training, education and experience makes you suitable for, and you are under a physicians care for your injury and/or illness.
I hope you noticed the subtle differences there. If you have a disability insurance plan that only has 24 months of Regular Occupation definition for disability insurance, and after that the definition changes to Any Occupation, then you could find yourself losing your disability income benefits and be forced to re-enter the workforce in a job you never wanted to do.
Personal disability insurance can protect your definition of occupation to Regular Occupation right through to age 65.
